Spelling this year will focus on word parts and word roots, high frequency words that 4th grade students should know, common contractions and compound words, homophones, and commonly misspelled words, so an understanding of the meaning of the word parts and word usage is an essential part of our spelling program this year.

I will be attaching the spelling menu that students may choose activities from to complete their nightly spelling homework. I would like to re-emphasize that spelling the words correctly is not our only goal – I expect students to understand the meanings of the word parts (prefixes and suffixes) and word roots.

Students may also practice their words at SpellingCity. In order to get credit for SpellingCity practice, students must be logged in to the account I’ve created for them. All spelling tests will be taken on SpellingCity throughout the week.
